Native to South Africa, Aloe nobilis, or Golden Tooth Aloe, is a vibrant and hardy succulent known for its bright green, rosette-shaped growth and distinctive golden spines. Shaped like a typical aloe plant, its yellow-green leaves are outlined with tiny white or yellow teeth, giving it the name “Golden Tooth.”
- Size: Grows up to 12 inches tall and spreads up to 4 feet across by offsetting.
- Hardiness: Tolerates temperatures as low as 25°F (-4°C). USDA hardiness zones 9b–10b.
- Light: Needs bright, indirect sunlight for at least 6 hours per day. Too much or too little sunlight can cause leaf discoloration or weaken the plant.
- Soil: Requires well-draining, sandy, or cactus potting mix to prevent waterlogging.
- Watering: During the growing season, water weekly, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering to once every few weeks during the dormant season.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 60–80°F (16–27°C). Protect from frost and prolonged exposure to cold temperatures.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years in spring to accommodate growth, using a slightly larger pot with proper drainage.
Care Tips:
- Indoor Care: Position near a sunny window with bright, indirect light, and avoid overwatering.
- Outdoor Care: Place in a location with sufficient sunlight but avoid intense, prolonged direct exposure in hot climates.
- Maintenance: Remove offsets to propagate or manage plant size. Use a diluted cactus fertilizer during the growing season to promote healthy growth.
