Hatiora salicornioides, commonly known as Bottle Cactus or Drunkard’s Dream, is a unique, trailing succulent with segmented, bottle-shaped stems. Despite its name, it is not a true cactus but belongs to the epiphytic Rhipsalideae tribe, making it well-adapted to growing in trees or rocky environments. This plant produces small, bright yellow to orange flowers in the spring, adding to its ornamental appeal. Its easy-care nature and trailing growth habit make it a fantastic choice for hanging baskets and indoor plant collections.
- Size: Can grow up to 2–6 feet (0.6–1.8 m) long, developing a cascading habit.
- Hardiness: Prefers warm climates and is hardy in USDA zones 10–12. Not frost-tolerant.
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some morning sun, but avoid harsh afternoon sunlight, which can scorch its delicate stems.
- Soil: Prefers well-draining, organic-rich soil. A mix of cactus soil and orchid bark works well to mimic its natural environment.
- Watering: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Unlike desert cacti, this plant enjoys slightly more moisture but should never sit in waterlogged soil. Reduce watering in winter.
- Temperature: Ideal temperatures range from 60–80°F (16–27°C). Keep above 50°F (10°C) to prevent damage.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Use a pot with drainage holes.
- Indoor Care: Keep in a warm, bright location, such as near an east- or west-facing window. Rotate occasionally for even growth.
- Outdoor Care: If grown outdoors, provide filtered sunlight and protect from heavy rain.
- Maintenance: Prune lightly to maintain shape. This plant can be propagated easily from stem cuttings. During the growing season (spring and summer), fertilize monthly with a diluted cactus or orchid fertilizer.
