Echinopsis chamaecereus, commonly known as the Peanut Cactus, is a small, low-growing cactus that gets its name from its unique, peanut-shaped, clustered stems. Native to Argentina, this cactus is known for its charming appearance and vibrant flowers, making it a favorite among cactus collectors and enthusiasts. The Peanut Cactus forms dense clusters of cylindrical stems that are bright green, with prominent ribbing and small spines. In the spring and summer, the plant produces stunning, tubular flowers that range from bright orange to red, adding a pop of color to its otherwise understated form.

  • Size: Grows up to 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) tall and can spread up to 18 inches (45 cm) wide when well-established.
  • Hardiness: Tolerates temperatures as low as 30°F (-1°C). USDA hardiness zones 9–11.
  • Light: Prefers bright, direct sunlight for at least 4–6 hours a day. Indoors, place near a south- or west-facing window for optimal light.
  • Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix, to prevent waterlogging and root rot.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly, but allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water less frequently in winter, when the cactus is dormant.
  • Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Protect from frost and freezing temperatures.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant becomes rootbound, using a container with good drainage.

Care Tips:

  • Indoor Care: Ensure the cactus receives enough bright, direct sunlight and has good drainage. Avoid overwatering, especially during the winter months.
  • Outdoor Care: In warmer climates, place in a sunny spot with well-draining soil, ensuring protection from frost.
  • Maintenance: The Peanut Cactus is low-maintenance, but it may occasionally require pruning to keep its shape. Fertilize lightly with a balanced cactus fertilizer during the growing season to support healthy growth.
