Echinobivia 'Rainbow Burst', commonly known as the Rainbow Burst Cactus, is a hybrid between Echinopsis and Lobivia species, prized for its vibrant, multi-colored blooms and attractive spiny appearance. This compact cactus forms spherical to cylindrical stems that are green with pronounced ribs, covered in white to golden spines. When in bloom, it produces large, showy flowers in shades of red, orange, yellow, and pink—often with gradient hues that resemble a rainbow. These blooms can last for several days and are a striking feature of this easy-to-grow cactus.
- Size: Grows up to 6 inches (15 cm) tall and 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) wide, forming clumping offsets over time.
- Hardiness: Tolerates temperatures as low as 20°F (-6°C) for short periods. USDA hardiness zones 9–11.
- Light: Prefers bright, direct sunlight for 4–6 hours daily. Indoors, place near a south- or west-facing window.
- Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix, to prevent root rot.
- Watering: Use the "soak and dry" method—water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry completely before the next watering. Water less frequently in the winter.
- Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 60–85°F (16–29°C). Protect from frost and extreme cold.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or as needed, especially if offsets crowd the pot.
Care Tips:
- Indoor Care: Provide ample bright light and rotate the plant occasionally to ensure even growth. Avoid overwatering, especially during winter dormancy.
- Outdoor Care: Plant in a sunny, well-draining location. In colder climates, grow in containers that can be moved indoors during frosty weather.
- Maintenance: Remove spent flowers to encourage new blooms and offsets. Fertilize sparingly during the growing season with a diluted cactus fertilizer.
