Echeveria runyonii 'Topsy Turvy' is a whimsical and eye-catching succulent with unique, spoon-shaped leaves that curve upward and inward, creating a rosette with a twisted, sculptural appearance. The silvery blue-gray leaves are thick and fleshy, often with a powdery coating of farina that gives them a soft, matte finish. In the fall, this Echeveria produces bright orange and yellow bell-shaped flowers on tall, slender stalks, adding vibrant color to its intriguing form.
- Size: Grows up to 6 inches (15 cm) tall and 8 inches (20 cm) wide.
- Hardiness: Tolerates temperatures as low as 25°F (-4°C). USDA hardiness zones 9–11.
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight to full sun. Indoors, place near a south- or east-facing window.
- Soil: Prefers well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix, to prevent root rot.
- Watering: Use the "soak and dry" method—water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry out completely before the next watering. Water sparingly during winter dormancy.
- Temperature: Ideal temperatures are between 60–85°F (16–29°C). Protect from frost and prolonged cold.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or as needed, especially if offsets crowd the container.
Care Tips:
- Indoor Care: Provide bright light and rotate the plant occasionally to ensure even growth. Avoid letting water collect in the rosette, as this can lead to rot.
- Outdoor Care: In warm climates, grow in a sunny, well-draining spot. Protect from frost during colder months.
- Maintenance: Remove dead or damaged leaves to encourage healthy growth and aesthetic appeal. Propagate using offsets or leaf cuttings. Fertilize sparingly during the growing season with a diluted succulent fertilizer.
