Peperomia ferreyrae, commonly referred to as Green Bean Peperomia or Happy Bean Plant, is a unique and low-maintenance houseplant known for its slender, bean-like leaves. Native to South America, this tropical perennial is a member of the Piperaceae family and thrives in bright indoor settings. Its compact size and striking foliage make it an excellent choice for tabletops, windowsills, or as part of a mixed plant arrangement.
- Size: Grows up to 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) tall and 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) wide.
- Hardiness: Not frost-tolerant; thrives in USDA hardiness zones 10–12.
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves, and low light, which can cause leggy growth.
- Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a mix designed for succulents or a combination of potting soil, perlite, and sand.
- Watering: Water when the top 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) of soil feel dry. Avoid overwatering, as this plant is sensitive to root rot.
- Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 65–80°F (18–27°C). Protect from drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant outgrows its pot, using a container with good drainage.
Care Tips:
- Indoor Care: Place in a bright room near an east- or west-facing window with filtered light.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Use a pebble tray or humidifier if the air is too dry.
- Maintenance: Wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust and enhance photosynthesis. Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a balanced, diluted houseplant fertilizer.
