Portulacaria afra ‘Variegata’, commonly known as Variegated Elephant Bush, is a beautiful, trailing succulent with small, round, green leaves edged in creamy white. This plant closely resembles jade plants (Crassula species) but has a more compact, bushy growth habit. Native to South Africa, it is drought-tolerant and an excellent choice for bonsai, hanging baskets, and container gardens.
- Size: Can grow up to 2–4 feet (60–120 cm) tall and 3–5 feet (90–150 cm) wide when mature, though it remains smaller in containers.
- Hardiness: Tolerates temperatures as low as 25°F (-4°C) but prefers warmer climates. USDA zones 9–11.
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light to full sun. More sunlight enhances its variegation. If grown indoors, place near a south- or west-facing window.
- Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix. Adding perlite or sand improves drainage.
- Watering: Use the "soak and dry" method—water thoroughly but allow the soil to dry completely before watering again. Water once a week during the growing season and reduce to once every few weeks in winter.
- Temperature: Ideal temperature range is 60–85°F (16–29°C). Protect from frost and prolonged cold exposure.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant outgrows its pot. Use a pot with drainage holes.
- Indoor Care: Prefers warm, bright locations. Rotate occasionally for even growth.
- Outdoor Care: If planting outside, provide afternoon shade in extremely hot climates.
- Maintenance: Trim occasionally to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth. Propagate easily from stem cuttings—allow cuttings to dry for a day before planting in dry soil.
- Fertilizing: Feed with a diluted cactus fertilizer once a month during spring and summer for optimal growth.
