Ceropegia woodii, commonly known as String of Arrows or String of Hearts, is a charming trailing succulent with distinctive heart-shaped leaves that grow along long, slender stems. This plant is often admired for its unique, ornamental appearance and is an excellent choice for hanging baskets or as a cascading ground cover.

  • Size: Grows up to 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) tall, but its trailing stems can reach lengths of 3 feet (91 cm) or more.
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 9–11. Tolerates temperatures as low as 30°F (-1°C) for short periods but should be protected from frost.
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sunlight. It thrives in bright light, and too little light can cause leggy growth and reduced leaf color. Indoors, place near a south- or west-facing window for the best results.
  • Soil: Requires well-draining soil. A cactus or succulent mix is ideal, and adding perlite or sand helps improve drainage.
  • Watering: Use the "soak and dry" method—allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly, typically once every 1–2 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer), and reduce watering in the dormant season (fall and winter).
  • Temperature: Thrives in 65–75°F (18–24°C). Protect from frost and cold temperatures, as it is sensitive to freezing.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years if the plant becomes rootbound or outgrows its container. Use a pot with drainage holes to avoid water retention.
  • Indoor Care: Ceropegia woodii is perfect for hanging baskets, where its long, trailing vines can cascade beautifully. Ensure it receives plenty of bright, indirect light and avoid overwatering.
  • Outdoor Care: In warmer climates, plant in a spot that receives morning sunlight and afternoon shade. This will help prevent sunburn in hot weather.
  • Maintenance: Trim back any leggy or damaged vines to keep the plant looking tidy. You can propagate Ceropegia woodii by taking stem cuttings and allowing them to callous before replanting in well-draining soil.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilize sparingly during the growing season with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer. Over-fertilizing can cause the plant to become leggy and weak.
