String of Dolphins (Senecio peregrinus) is a captivating succulent known for its unique, dolphin-shaped leaves that resemble leaping dolphins. This plant is a member of the Senecio genus and is a hybrid of the String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus). It’s a popular choice for succulent collectors, hanging baskets, and decorative planters due to its playful and exotic appearance.
- Size: Typically grows 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) tall, with trailing stems that can reach 3 feet (91 cm) or more in length.
- Hardiness: USDA zones 9–11. Tolerates temperatures as low as 25°F (-4°C) but should be protected from frost and cold temperatures.
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sunlight. Too little light can cause the leaves to become elongated and lose their dolphin shape. Indoors, place near a south- or west-facing window for optimal results.
- Soil: Requires well-draining soil. A cactus or succulent mix is ideal, or you can add perlite or sand to ensure good drainage and prevent root rot.
- Watering: Use the "soak and dry" method—let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly, typically once every 2–3 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer), and even less frequently during dormancy (fall and winter).
- Temperature: Thrives in 65–75°F (18–24°C). Protect from frost and freezing temperatures.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant outgrows its container. Ensure the new pot has drainage holes to prevent water retention and root rot.
- Indoor Care: String of Dolphins is perfect for hanging baskets or containers where its trailing vines can cascade. Ensure it gets plenty of bright, indirect light and avoid overwatering. Be sure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.
- Outdoor Care: In warmer climates, plant in full sun to partial shade. Ensure the plant is in well-draining soil, and protect it from frost in colder climates.
- Maintenance: Trim back any leggy or damaged stems to maintain the plant’s shape. You can propagate String of Dolphins by taking stem cuttings and letting them dry out before replanting in well-draining soil.
- Fertilizing: Fertilize sparingly with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer). Over-fertilizing can lead to leggy growth and reduced health.
