Native to Mexico, Opuntia microdasys, commonly known as Bunny Ears Cactus or Polka Dot Cactus, is a charming and distinctive cactus species. Its name comes from its paired, oval-shaped pads that resemble bunny ears. Covered in tiny, harmless-looking clusters of glochids (yellow or white spines), this cactus is a favorite for its whimsical appearance and low-maintenance care requirements.
- Size: Reaches up to 2–3 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide in ideal conditions.
- Hardiness: Can tolerate temperatures as low as 20°F (-6°C). USDA hardiness zones 9–11.
- Light: Thrives in full sun. Indoors, place near a south- or west-facing window for optimal light.
- Soil: Requires well-draining cactus or sandy soil to prevent root rot.
- Watering: Follow the "soak and dry" method—allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water sparingly during winter when the plant is dormant.
- Temperature: Prefers warm conditions, ideally 70–100°F (21–37°C). Protect from frost and freezing temperatures.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years, preferably in spring or early summer, to accommodate growth and refresh the soil.
Care Tips:
- Indoor Care: Ensure bright, direct sunlight and avoid overwatering. A pot with good drainage is essential to prevent waterlogging.
- Outdoor Care: Position in a sunny location with protection from heavy rainfall or frost.
- Maintenance: Avoid touching the pads directly, as the glochids can irritate the skin. Fertilize during the growing season with a diluted cactus fertilizer for optimal growth.
