Kalanchoe tomentosa ‘Panda Plant Brownie’ is a fuzzy, slow-growing succulent known for its velvety chocolate-brown leaves edged with darker spots. This drought-tolerant plant is an excellent choice for indoor gardens, as it thrives in dry conditions and requires minimal maintenance.
- Size: Grows up to 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) tall and 12 inches (30 cm) wide.
- Hardiness: USDA zones 9–11. Can tolerate temperatures as low as 30°F (-1°C) for short periods but should be protected from frost.
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to full sun. Indoors, place near a south- or west-facing window for best growth. Outdoors, provide morning sunlight and afternoon shade in hot climates.
- Soil: Requires well-draining, sandy soil or a cactus/succulent mix to prevent root rot. Adding perlite or pumice helps improve aeration.
- Watering: Use the "soak and dry" method—allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water every 2–3 weeks in summer and once a month in winter. Avoid watering the leaves directly to prevent rot.
- Temperature: Thrives in 60–80°F (16–27°C). Protect from extreme cold and prolonged exposure to temperatures below freezing.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years in spring if the plant outgrows its pot. Use a shallow container with drainage holes.
- Indoor Care: Ideal for low-humidity environments. Ensure proper airflow to prevent fungal issues.
- Outdoor Care: Can be grown outdoors in warm climates but should be shaded from intense afternoon sun.
- Maintenance: Remove dead or damaged leaves to maintain a tidy appearance. Propagates easily from leaf cuttings or offsets.
- Fertilizing: Feed with a diluted cactus fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) for optimal growth.
